VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (WAVY) — Dominion Energy’s Coastal Virginia Offshore Wind Energy project is well underway, but with the incoming Trump administration, people are left wondering what will happen.
Dominion Energy said the project comes with a nearly $10 billion price tag, promising a job market and renewable energy for 660,000 homes.
However, President-elect Donald Trump has been vocal that he doesn’t believe those promises outweigh what he said is the negative. His criticism of the Biden administration’s encouragement of renewable energy was on full display in Chesapeake during one of his campaign rallies this fall.
“He’s given massive subsidies to windmills all over the country that are ruining our beautiful plains, our beautiful land, our beautiful oceans,” Trump said from behind the podium.
Despite the pushback, experts are looking off the coast of Virginia Beach at Dominion Energy’s multi-billion dollar project with confidence.
“He had threatened on day one to shut down offshore wind — he can’t,” said Eileen Woll, offshore energy director for the Sierra Club of Virginia.
Woll said Dominion Energy’s Coastal Offshore Wind Project will continue. She told 10 On Your Side they’ve cleared every state and federal hurdle long before the transfer of power. Woll, though, is concerned about the future of renewable energy and the manufacturing industry it promises.
“Wer’e trying to get these big manufactures to build billion dollar sites,” she said. “But they’re only going to do that if there a good pipeline of projects.”
10 On Your Side also received a statement from Sen. Mark Warner, who expressed his support for wind energy programs in Virginia.
“I’m incredibly proud that Virginia has emerged as a national leader in the development of offshore wind,” Warner said. “The Coastal Virginia Offshore Wind project — anticipated to produce enough electricity to power up to 660,000 homes with clean and renewable energy — is well underway and expected to be complete by 2026.
“In addition, Virginia has secured additional offshore wind lease areas that could provide up to five gigawatts of offshore wind energy if developed, powering hundreds of thousands of additional homes in the Commonwealth. It’s clear that Virginia is well-positioned to serve as a national hub for offshore wind development in the U.S., and I’m ready to defend against any action that impedes our ability to provide clean and affordable energy to Virginians or jeopardizes jobs in the Hampton Roads region.”
With the new administration’s proposed policies, that pipeline could shrink. Is Dominion Energy concerned?
“Virginia’s clean energy transition and our ‘all of the above’ strategy, including Coastal Virginia Offshore Wind (CVOW), have been underway for several years under multiple state and federal administrations and with bipartisan support from policymakers at every level,” Dominion Energy said via email. “Continuing, it stated that “Bipartisan leaders agree it has been an economic boom for Virginia, creating thousands of jobs and stimulating billions in economic growth, while providing consumers with reliable and affordable energy. Leaders from both parties also agree on the importance of American energy dominance, maintaining our technological superiority, and creating good-paying jobs for Americans. We’re confident CVOW will be completed on-time and on-budget, and that Virginia’s clean energy transition will continue with bipartisan support for many years to come.”
