Prepare for hurricane season: Protect your documents and valuables

Before a storm hits, make sure you have copies of your important documents. Place them in a secure location, in a waterproof container.

It’s also a good idea to store some vital records on a password-protected cloud storage device.

The VA Department of Emergency Management recomends ensuring you have access to these important documents:

Before a storm hits, you should record a video or photo walkthrough of your home and back that video/photo up online. That way if you need to prove the condition of you home prior to the storm for insurance purposes, you’ll have documentation.

If you live in a flood zone, consider lifting furniture off the floor. Place photo albums in a zip-loc or trash bag to protect from water.

If evacuating, make sure you take your documents and any family photos. If you live in the OBX, make sure you have documentation on your address. You may need it to re-enter.
