City services impacted by Dorian: Parking, recycling, trash

HAMPTON ROADS, Va. (WAVY) — City officials are adjusting services as Hurricane Dorian threatens to impact the region.

Chesapeake

Trash, recycling, and bulk waste collection will be suspended in Chesapeake on Friday, Sept. 6. Friday’s collection will be performed on Saturday. There is no impact to any scheduled collection on Thursday, Sept. 5. Click here to get additional Dorian updates from the City.

Hampton

The City of Hampton is suspending trash collection on Friday. Residents should not put their cans, bulk trash or yard debris at the curb. Trash collection for Friday’s routes are now scheduled to begin at 7 a.m. on Saturday.

Hampton’s stormwater crews are out clearing ditches and storm drains. Public Works is also testing and getting generators ready. Human Services is putting together plans for shelters, if needed.

Newport News

Solid waste collections (trash, recycling and bulk waste) were already delayed one day due to the Labor Day holiday. The city will not collect trash on Friday; collection for Friday’s route (collections that typically take place on Thursday) will begin on Saturday morning, if conditions allow. Please do not place containers, bulk trash or yard debris at the curb before Saturday, as debris can block storm drains, making flooding worse.

Parking: The Fountain Way and Merchants Walk parking garages in City Center are available for Newport News residents of low-lying areas to park their vehicles.

Norfolk

The City of Norfolk on Wednesday announced several garages will be open to residents until Saturday, Sept. 7 at noon.

Fountain Park Garage, 130 Bank Street
Main Street Garage, 230 East Main Street
West Plume Street Garage, 135 West Plume Street
Town Point Garage, 110 West Main Street

In addition, Old Dominion University parking garages will open to residents on Thursday at 5 p.m. Those garages will close for Norfolk residents at 8 a.m. on Monday.

ODU announced Wednesday it is cancelling all classes and events for Friday.

City officials said trash, recycling and bulk waste collection will continue as scheduled for Thursday, but will be suspended on Friday. Friday’s collection routes are expected to be collected on Saturday.

City crews are expected to remove beach waste cans by 3 p.m. Wednesday and will replace them on Saturday.

All Hampton Roads Transit services will be suspended on Friday, Sept. 6 due to the impact of Hurricane Dorian. Operations for the ferry will stop at 4 p.m. on Thursday.

Portsmouth

Effective at 8 a.m. Wednesday, the city of Portsmouth is asking residents not to place any yard waste or tree debris out for collection. Waste Management is suspending bulk pick-up collection and Friday because of the weather forecast.

The city is opening up city garages on Thursday at 8 a.m.

At this time, the city is going to continue regular trash collection, but is asking residents to secure their trash cans before the storm.

Suffolk

Suffolk Public Works and TFC Recycling have cancelled trash and recycling collections for Friday, September 6, due to Dorian’s current track.

Residents should not place their refuse containers curbside Thursday evening or Friday morning to avoid potential damage from blowing containers and debris.

Service scheduled for Friday will be picked up on Saturday. Trash must be placed at curbside no later than 7 a.m. on the day of collection.

Virginia Beach

The City of Virginia Beach is letting residents park for free at the municipal garages at 9th and 31st streets at the Oceanfront, starting immediately. As of now, cars that remain in the garages after noon Saturday will be charged. The city says that could change depending on the weather conditions. Residents will be required to show a driver’s license or recent utility bill with their name and a Virginia Beach address to get the free parking.

All city-owned surface parking lots at the Oceanfront will be closed until after the storm passes.
