VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (WAVY) – An EF-3 tornado touched down Sunday night in the northeast part of Virginia Beach, leaving behind lots of damage but fortunately no reported injuries.
On Monday morning, the National Weather Service Wakefield confirmed the EF-3, the first one ever for the city. That’s considered a “strong” tornado with winds between 136-165 mph, just two notches below the strongest tornadoes, the EF-5 with winds above 200 mph.
“We have confirmed an EF-3 tornado occurred in the Great Neck portion of the city of Virginia Beach yesterday evening. The storm survey is still ongoing and additional details will be released later today.”

Chopper 10 captured the damage from the Virginia Beach tornado on Monday morning.
Chopper 10 captured footage from the Virginia Beach tornado’s path on Sunday night. Here homes are seen with destruction. Roads are blocked from downed trees and other destruction. 10 on Your Side’s Andy Fox said there were difficulties traveling through the neighborhood. As seen in this image, the top floor of a home had significant damage. The Chopper 10 view shows the destruction to this neighborhood along the water. This home’s roof was damaged in the storm. You can see more damage to roofs throughout this neighborhood. This Chopper 10 view shows damage to a roof, trees down, and more destruction. Homes along this golf course were damaged. In this footage, you can see damage along the water. Trees and other home materials fill the streets in this neighborhood. Large trees seem to be uprooted in this neighborhood. There are utility vehicles and crews seen by the damage. Trees fell over into this home. Branches and more debris look to be covering the roof. A large tree fell over into the street. Large trees were knocked down from the EF-3 tornado. Chopper 10 images show the destruction across multiple homes.
