40 percent of public school students in Virginia Beach are on free or reduced lunch and while they may get lunch and breakfast at school during the school week, many of these students may have trouble getting food or meals on weekends.

That’s where the Beach Bags program comes in. It was started in 2009…and now more than 1,500 bags of shelf-stable meals are handed out each week to make sure students have food to eat on the weekend.

Chris Reckling highlights the program in this week’s Reck on the Road.
