NORFOLK, Va. (WAVY) — As area teams get ready for the start of the high school football season, not many teams carry the confidence of the Maury Commodores.

Coach Dyrii McCain and his staff and players have every right to be confident considering they cruised to the Class 5 state championship last season.

Maury went 15-0 and outscored its opponents by 47 points per game.

Last year’s version of the Commodores goes down as one of the most dominant teams in Hampton Roads history.

Coach McCain lost some players, but he returns some key pieces, notably quarterback Au’tori Newkirk and four-star defensive end Ari Watford who is going to Clemson.

The goal for Maury is simple, a state championship. This year’s state title game takes place on December 14th.

“Our last practice has to be December 13th,” McCain said. “This team can create its own legacy for doing something that has never been done before in school history.”

McCain referring to Maury going for consecutive state champions.

Commodores open the season September 6th against Maryland state champions Wise.
