Driver killed in single-vehicle crash on I-664 in Chesapeake; dog and rabbit survive

CHESAPEAKE, Va. (WAVY) – All southbound lanes of I-664 were closed for several hours in Chesapeake, near Dock Landing Road, following a fatal single-vehicle crash Wednesday afternoon.

The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) camera in that area showed multiple passenger vehicles and emergency vehicles blocking all lanes near mile-marker 18. The road reopened by 6:40 p.m., according to VDOT.

A Virginia State Police sergeant said the female driver was the only person in the car, but she was also traveling with a dog and rabbit.

The female died in the crash, but the dog and rabbit survived.

Police said the female was recklessly driving before the crash. She lost control and overturned just before 4 p.m.

The lanes were expected to stay shut down for at least 30 minutes to an hour as of 5:30 p.m.

The dog and rabbit were handed over to animal control.

Virginia State Police is the lead agency investigating the crash.
