HAMPTON, Va. (WAVY) — Drivers who take I-64 west between the Hampton River bridge and the North Armistead Avenue overpass bridge will run into a new traffic pattern in the coming days as construction of the Hampton Roads Express Lanes (HREL) Hampton Segment continues.
According to the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT), the shift could begin as early as Thursday, Oct. 24.
The new configuration will shift westbound traffic left toward the median from the outside lanes to the inside lanes to allow for continuing roadway work, drainage improvements, barrier setting and noise barrier construction.
Additionally, the I-64 west off-ramp to Armistead Avenue/LaSalle Avenue (exit 265B) will be closed nightly Oct. 20-25, from 10 p.m. to 5 a.m., with a signed detour in place.
VDOT encourages drivers to use I-664 as an alternate route to avoid the work area when possible.
The long-term shift is expected to remain in place until summer 2025.
