New traffic patterns on I-64 eastbound in Hampton

HAMPTON, Va. (WAVY) – Drivers in Hampton will encounter a new traffic pattern while the Virginia Department of Transportation builds express lanes. Drivers could see these changes as soon as Tuesday morning.

Eastbound traffic beginning from the Rip Rap Road overpass to the Hampton River Bridge will be shifted left from the outside lanes to the inside lanes. This will allow for roadwork, drainage improvements and noise barrier construction without stopping traffic.

Starting Nov. 17 and continuing until Nov. 22, the off-ramp to Armistead Avenue/Langley Air Force Base will be closed from 10 p.m. to 5 a.m. nightly. Motorists are encouraged to use I-664 as a detour during the construction, which is expected to last until summer 2025.

This HREL Hampton Segment will ultimately become a part of an overall continuous 45-mile high-occupancy toll Express Lanes network on I-64, from west of Denbigh Boulevard in Newport News to the I-264/I-664 Bowers Hill interchange in Chesapeake.
