PARIS (WAVY) – 10 On Your Side’s Marielena Balouris was in Paris Wednesday morning to talk about where the 2034 Winter Olympics will be held.

Salt Lake City, Utah, was named as the host of the 2034 Winter Olympics after a delegation from Utah stood before the 142nd Session of the International Olympic Committee (IOC). Salt Lake City previously hosted the Olympics in 2002.

Members of the IOC voted 83-6 in favor of Salt Lake City being the host city for 2034.

On Tuesday, WAVY 10 spoke with Olympic and government leaders from the Utah delegation about their bid for the games.

One of the big topics the delegation focused on was sustainability, such as reusing existing venues in Salt Lake instead of creating new venues and having the University of Utah being home to the Athlete Village.

Unity was also discussed as an important factor the IOC was looking for with host cities.

“Because we see the value of bringing the world together, under the umbrella of sport to celebrate human achievement, the things that these athletes do,” Fraser Bullock, Salt Lake Utah Committee for the Games President and CEO said. “But it brings all these nations together, 200 countries, to celebrate sport and being together. The only place that’s done is the games.”

“The spirit of camaraderie of the Olympics is the penultimate of that, so I think having the opportunity to do that is really, really extraordinary,” Amb. Denise Campbell Bauer, U.S. Ambassador to France and Monaco said.

Including the 2028 Summer Olympic Games in Los Angeles, California, this will be the 10th time the Unites States has hosted the Olympics.
