NORFOLK, Va. (WAVY) — The Old Dominion women’s basketball team defeated VCU 53-51 in overtime Thursday night at Chartway Arena.

The Monarchs led by as many as nine points, but trailed by one heading into the fourth period.

In overtime, Kelsey Thompson banked in a three-pointer to give ODU (4-1) a three-point lead, but the Rams answered with a three-pointer by Mary Anna Asare to tie it up at 51.

On ODU’s next possession, Thompson missed a three-point attempt, but Simone Cunningham grabbed the crucial rebound and had the go-ahead put back to give ODU a 53-51 win.

The Lady Monarchs host William & Mary Tuesday.
