NORFOLK, VA (WAVY) — Norfolk State football coach Dawson Odums said junior Otto Kuhns will be the Spartans’ quarterback for the 2023 season.

“Otto did a great job, he’ll be the starting QB,” Odums said. “He did an outstanding job and has done so all camp. We’re excited to see what he brings to the table.”

In 2022, Kuhns played eight games and put up 1,162 passing yards with 10 touchdowns and eight interceptions. It was his play during this preseason and this most recent scrimmage where coach knew he was the guy.

The Spartans have a younger roster — 77% of their roster is made up of freshmen or sophomores — but Odums said that could work to the team’s advantage.

“Well, I always tell ’em, you build a house, you build it with young bricks,” Odums said, “and I think that’s what it’s all about, gel those bricks together, and, over time, the house becomes a solid foundation for you to call a home. We’re happy about where we are.”

Kuhns and Norfolk State will take their field for the first time Saturday, Sept. 2, against Virginia State.
