CHESAPEAKE, Va. (WAVY) — A star basketball player who played at Green Run High School in Virginia Beach died after an accidental shooting Monday night in Chesapeake.
Chesapeake police say 19-year-old Ashley James was with a friend at an apartment on Montauk Lane in Greenbrier at the time. The two were looking at a handgun when a bullet was fired, striking James in the chest.

“It’s just really, really sad,” said Ruby Brown a neighbor in the apartment complex off Birch Run Road.
“It was so loud and you could hear screaming and yelling. It was a little unnerving to me and it was scary, because it happened right above me.”
Someone called police and medics arrived but the bullet wound to James’s chest was too much.
“The cops weren’t rushing in and it makes sense.”
James was in town to see his Green Run team win a playoff game Monday night at Scope Arena.
He was enrolled at Hargrave Military Academy as a post-grad, and had verbally committed to play next year at Missouri State.
Tributes to James started pouring in to social media, from family members, coaches and friends.
His brother pledged that his basketball legacy will live on in the 7 cities.

Friends got together Tuesday afternoon for a pick up game at Green Run Elementary as a tribute to James.
Police say no criminal charges are being filed and none are anticipated.
James hit a buzzer beater shot to send Green Run to the state tournament last year.
