Naval Station Norfolk commemorates 23rd anniversary of Sept. 11 attacks

NORFOLK, Va. (WAVY) – Naval Station Norfolk joined the nation Wednesday in commemorating the 23rd anniversary of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks with a solemn ceremony at Flag Plaza.

Several first responders and community members spoke during the observance, reflecting on the impact of Sept. 11 and the heroism shown by those who responded to the attacks. Speaker Ian Thompson noted the nation had not seen such a tragedy since the bombing of Pearl Harbor in 1941.

The ceremony also served as a call to action, urging attendees to continue embodying the spirit of service and sacrifice seen on that tragic day. Another speaker reflected on the legacy of Sept. 11, challenging the crowd to consider how they can contribute to their communities and uphold the values of those who gave their lives.

“To nearly 3,000 people who were killed during 9/11, killed from 93 different countries on that fateful day 22 years ago, our world was forever changed by the traumatic, tragic events unfolded as we come together to commemorate the lives of those who perished and honor those of the resilience of our nation,” Thompson said. “Let us reflect on the unity and strength that emerge from the darkness and reaffirm our commitment to fostering a future of peace, understanding and solidarity.”

Naval Station Norfolk’s commemoration is part of a nationwide effort to ensure the events and memories of Sept. 11 remain a lasting tribute to resilience, unity, and service.
