Remarkable Women Winner Michelle Ellis Young

PORTSMOUTH, Va. (WAVY) – Working to eliminate racism, empower women and promote peace, justice and dignity is the mission of the WAVY TV 10 2024 Remarkable Women winner. Whether she’s addressing a church congregation or counseling a victim of rape or abuse, YWCA of Hampton Roads CEO Michelle Ellis Young has found her purpose. Former co-worker, Kia Moten, nominated Ellis Young as a Remarkable Woman. She said clients and co-workers alike feel safe opening up to her.

Ellis Young gave credit to her amazing team at the YWCA of South Hampton Roads for making a difference in the lives of those who are dealing with domestic violence and for giving a voice to the voiceless. Ellis Young donated her winning check to the YWCA of South Hampton Roads and the Sapphire and Pearls Foundation so they can continue serving the community.

This is why Michelle Ellis Young was named WAVY TV’s “Remarkable Women” winner for 2024.

“It feels remarkable to just be in the company of so many family, friends and colleagues,” said Ellis Young during a special segment on The Hampton Roads Show Tuesday. “And people have been a part of the journey for a very long time. And then to be with my WAVY family is just awesome.”

“The work that we’re doing here in Hampton Roads speaks volumes for itself between YWCA and then my sorority of Zeta. I’m just honored to be able to represent both of those entities for the betterment of women and girls across this community,” she added.

As the winner, Ellis Young won a $1,000 donation to her charity of choice. She split her charitable donation award between the YWCA of South Hampton Roads and the Sapphire and Pearls Foundation of her sorority.

Ellis Young is headed to Los Angeles, California as part of the National “Remarkable Women” contest sponsored by Nexstar Media.
