NORFOLK, Va. (WAVY) — At Old Dominion University, Dr. Barbara Blake is working to make our next generation’s workforce stronger.

“Currently I am the executive director for the new Monarch Internship and Co-op Office,” Blake said.

She pioneered the program, which is bridging the gap between students and hundreds of Hampton Roads employers.

“We’re trying to change our campus culture from a question of, are you going to do an internship, to what type of internship are you going to do and when,” she said.

The pathway to a professional career also includes getting the students the tools they need to succeed, including things such as transportation to-and-from a job and appropriate clothing.

“It kind of taught me how to carry myself more as a like, professional individual and feel more confident in a work space in that way,” said ODU student Mackenzie Dellolio.

“From day one, I could tell that she is just highly motivated,” said ODU student Seth Smith. “She’s obviously a very successful individual and very passionate about this office, about Old Dominion University.”

Blake’s work at extends beyond the brick walls of ODU. Her research has helped shape policy, economic and social programs throughout Hampton Roads.

As a contributor to ODU’s annual ‘State of the Region’ reports, she has become a trusted expert for lawmakers and local leaders.

“We want our region to be prosperous,” Blake said. “We want we want people to stay and not leave.”

Her research on Supply and Demand of Hospice Care, Opioid Use in the Workplace, and the Women’s Leadership Gap have sparked conversations and guided Virginia policymakers and business leaders in developing strategies to create change.

“I’m particularly really passionate about speaking for vulnerable populations and for people who don’t necessarily have the voice,” she said.

Whether Blake is mentoring students or breaking down data for local leaders, hers is a powerful voice.

“I think we all in some way want to make the world a better place,” Blake said. “If I’ve been able to just, you know, make make the community just a little bit better, then I’ve done I’ve done what I needed to do.”
