PORTSMOUTH, Va. (WAVY) — After a double homicide of a woman and her stepfather Saturday morning, police have issued a warrant for the arrest of her brother.
Sheldon Marcus Porter, 36, has been charged with the murder of Wilbur and Chiquita Giles. Police found them both shot to death in the 3600 block of Gateway Drive just after midnight Saturday.
Police say Porter faces the following charges: two counts of first-degree murder and two counts of use of a firearm in the commission of a felony and possession of firearm by a felon (non-violent).
The Saturday morning deadly shooting comes just 11 days after another homicide in the city. Police made a speedy arrest after the shooting at Cock Island Bar and Grille left one man dead. Lt. B.K. Hall says he hopes the same timely arrest can be made in this situation.
Residents in the neighborhood say they’ve never had any issues like this before
“It’s frightening because a bullet could go astray, the walls are not that strong, and then if you’re standing by a window and I’m walking by, just the act of just shooting is quite scary,” said Francis White.
She said she is shocked to hear it has involved close family members
“I don’t know what it could have been about, but sometimes people do things and they just don’t think, and after it’s over your life is ruined and everybody else’s and in this case the entire family’s life is ruined,” she said.
Portsmouth Public Schools confirmed that Chiquita Giles was a Food Services Worker with the school system. A spokesperson issued this statement:
“We value all of our employees and are saddened when any one of them passes away. Our thoughts are with the family.”
Police are asking for the public’s assistance in locating Sheldon Marcus Porter. If you know his whereabouts, please contact the Portsmouth Police Department at (757)393-5300 or the Crime Line at 1-888-LOCK-U-UP.
