PORTSMOUTH, Va. (WAVY) – Police are investigating after a woman was shot and killed Tuesday afternoon in Portsmouth.
Dispatch received the first call about the incident around 3 p.m. near Portsmouth Boulevard and Des Moines Avenue.
Portsmouth police arrived and found an adult female suffering from a gunshot wound to the upper body. Medics later pronounced the woman dead at the scene.
Police will not release the name of the victim until next of kin has been notified.
“It’s very hurtful for the family, especially the day before Valentine’s Day, to have your loved one shot and killed,” said Detective Misty Holley.
Holley says there is no motive or suspect information and is asking to public for any information they can provide because the shooting happened in the middle of the day when kids where getting home from school.
“This incident happened in the daytime, in the street, in the neighborhood. This street has a lot of children. It’s very important for us to understand who it was, why it was that this incident happened,” she said.
Residents who came to check on the scene also wanted to know why this crime was committed.
“They need to stop the violence out here,” said Dre Robinson, who says a friend told him about the shooting.
Robinson says he’s fed up and hopes change in the community will come quickly.
The family of the victim is in his thoughts and prayers.
“I just send my condolences to her family. I wish y’all the best. I hope they find who did it. It’s messed up,” he said.
