Virginia’s Anti-Price Gouging Act enacted ahead of Hurricane Helene

RICHMOND, Va. (WAVY) – Virginia Attorney General Jason Miyares announced a state-wide price gouging protection ahead of Hurricane Helene.

According to a release, the anti-price gouging protection, which was activated after Governor Glenn Youngkin declared a state of emergency for the Commonwealth, aims to protect consumers purchasing necessities during emergency events.


Virginia’s Anti-Price Gouging Act, which was enacted in 2004, prohibits suppliers from charging “unconscionable prices for necessary goods and services following a declared state of emergency.” Items included in the protection include water, ice, food, generators, batteries, home repair materials and services and tree removal services.
