Va. ranks second nationwide in hospital patient safety, with 9 Hampton Roads hospitals

RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) — Virginia ranked second in hospital patient nationwide in the most recent Leapfrog Group Hospital Safety Grade state rankings. Nine Hampton Roads hospitals made the list.

According to a May 7 press release from the organization, the Leapfrog Group’s Hospital Safety Grade program assigns a letter grade to almost 3,000 “general acute care hospitals” throughout the United States. These scores are based on data from the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services, the Leapfrog Group and other unnamed sources.

Of the 72 Virginia hospitals graded, 40 of them received an “A” grade. That 56.3% rate earned Virginia its second-place ranking.

The Spring 2024 score report from the Leapfrog Group puts Virginia just behind Utah, missing out on that first-place spot by just over one percent. Notably, the third-place state — New Jersey — has over 10% less A-graded hospitals.

In the Fall 2023 grading period, Utah and Virginia ranked the same as they did in the Spring. However, Fall’s third-place ranking — North Carolina — fell to eighth place this Spring.
