VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (WAVY) — Nominations are now open for the Virginia Sports Hall of Fame Student-Athlete Achievement Awards scholarships. The Hall of Fame states they are looking for “high school senior student-athletes in Virginia who excel academically and engage in their communities.”
Nominees have to meet the following criteria:
- Attend high school in Virginia (public or private)
- Be a senior during the 2024-2025 academic year
- Letter in at least 1 VHSL/VISAA sanctioned sport
- Have a minimum of 3.0 GPA
Student-athletes can nominate themselves. They can also be nominated by a family member, coach, administrator or mentor. If you nominate a student athlete, you will be asked to include details and references that showcase the student’s achievements in academics, civic work and athletics.
One letter of recommendation and a personal essay from the student, are required to complete the nomination process. Nominations and all supporting documents can be submitted through the online application.

All nominations must be received by Friday, Oct. 18. After the nominations are received, the Student-Athlete Achievement Awards selection committee will choose the finalists for the scholarship awards. The scholarship winners will be announced during a scholarship awards reception in early 2025. The date and time have not yet been set.
In 2023, the Hall of Fame awarded $14,000 in scholarships to 16 student-athletes from Virginia: Nine girls and seven boys. Four student-athletes of the year each received a $1,250 scholarship from the Hall of Fame:
- Emily Edwards, 12th grade, Galax High School, Galax
- Braden Lee, 12th grade, Lafayette High School, Williamsburg
- Ashlyn Newman, 12th grade, Carroll County High School, Hillsville
- Breyona Robinson, 12th grade, Hermitage High School, Henrico
The Hall of Fame awarded the remaining 12 finalists with a $750 scholarship award.
