PORTSMOUTH, Va. (WAVY) — Scallops are making one “shell” of a comeback on Virginia’s Eastern Shore.
After being previously extinct in the area, bay scallops may be approaching sustainable levels, according to the results of Virginia Institute of Marine Science’s annual Bay Scallop Survey.
Spending more than a decade of releasing scallops into the wild, the population is approaching levels used by other states to manage recreational harvests. This is thanks to the largest seagrass restoration effort in the world, according to Virginia Institute of Marine Science.
