Parents using Virginia tax-free weekend for back-to-school shopping

PORTSMOUTH, Va. (WAVY) — Tax-free weekend is on throughout the entire state of Virginia. This means you can save big on certain items.

This weekend in Virginia, the sales tax will vanish for things like school supplies, clothes, hurricane gear and even some appliances.

The sales tax rate varies across the state. For Hampton Roads, it is set at six percent. This means if you were to buy a $2,000 refrigerator, you will not have to pay the $120 tax.

The tax holiday is a huge deal to back to school shoppers. It is a big draw for moms and dads who are restocking on notebooks, backpacks and other classroom gear.

“Not only helps the parents, but it just helps the community in general,” Christina Battle said. “It helps us save money. I have kids, so I know I spend a lot on school supplies.”

Tax free weekend is back to its normal August time frame. It was pushed to October after the general assembly did not immediately renew the holiday last year. Parents agree, having this before the school year is helpful.

“Every little bit helps, I would say go ahead and get what you need, and if you have a list that’s great,” Sheldon Griffin said. “If you don’t have a list, you should have a pretty good idea on what to get, like paper, pens, notebooks, and things like that.”

There are dollar amount limits to certain types of goods that apply to tax season. We have a comprehensive list on our website.
