Here’s why flags are at half-staff in Virginia

RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) — Governor Glenn Youngkin has ordered all U.S. and Virginia flags in front of all local, state and federal buildings across the Commonwealth to fly at half-staff on Wednesday, Sept. 11.

According to a release from Youngkin’s Office, the flag order is in memory and respect for the nearly 3,000 victims of the terrorist attacks on Sept. 11, 2001 — over 100 of whom were in the Pentagon in Arlington County, Virginia.

“Furthermore, I urge all Virginians to seek opportunities to proudly display the flag of the United States of America—whether big or small, at your home or away at school, planted in your yard, or pinned to your lapel,” said Youngkin in the release. “Let us all pause and reflect on the heroism and sacrifice made by so many.”

Flags will be lowered to half-staff at sunrise on Wednesday, Sept. 11 and remain until sunset.
