HENRICO COUNTY, Va. (WRIC) — Multiple dogs are being quarantined on a Henrico County homeowner’s property after they were exposed to a rabid raccoon on Wednesday — the third confirmed case of rabies in the county so far this year.
According to the Henrico County Police Division, officers responded to the 9000 block of Merlin Court on Wednesday, May 22, for report of a potential rabies exposure involving a raccoon and multiple companion dogs.
The raccoon tested positive for rabies. According to police, while all of the involved dogs have valid rabies vaccines, they are currently being quarantined on the homeowner’s property. No other animals or humans are believed to have been exposed.
This is the third confirmed case of rabies in Henrico County so far this year. The previous two took place in March and April, involving a rabid raccoon and two dogs and a rabid cat that scratched its owner, respectively.
“The Henrico Police Animal Protection Unit reminds everyone to keep their pets’ rabies vaccinations current to ensure the safety of their pets and our community,” said police in a press release.
Recently, on May 18, the police division held a rabies vaccination clinic for animals in need of a rabies vaccine. The next rabies clinic is scheduled to take place on Saturday, Aug. 17, from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. at the Henrico County Western Government Center. Additional dates can be found here.
