PORTSMOUTH, Va. (WAVY) – According to new data from The Sports Geek, athletes with ties to Virginia did not disappoint at the 2024 Paris Olympics.

Analysts from The Sports Geek looked into which states earned the most medals during the Paris Olympics, and found that Virginia came in at seventh, with a total of 14 medals: seven gold, five silver and two bronze. Medal totals included multiple medals for team sports.

While most Virginia medals came from athletes from the University of Virginia’s swimming team thanks to swimming stars Kate Douglass and Gretchen Walsh, athletes from the Hampton Roads region also returned with a few medals of their own, such as Chesapeake’s own Grant Holloway, who took gold in the 110m men’s hurdles.

Another Chesapeake native, 16-year-old Quincy Wilson, helped Team USA get the gold medal for the 4x400m relay, also making history as the youngest American male track Olympian in history.

Other notable athletes with ties to Virginia include Alexandria’s Noah Lyles, who claimed a gold medal in the men’s 100m and a bronze in the men’s 200m, and Arlington’s Tori Huske, who earned a total of three gold and two silver medals for swimming.
