CHESAPEAKE, Va. (WAVY) – During a live traffic report on WAVY TV Monday morning, our cameras captured a driver turn around and start driving in the wrong direction on Interstate 64.

The incident happened on the section of I-64 in Chesapeake where a new travel lane just opened. It’s part of the High Rise Bridge Expansion Project.

This third travel lane is on I-64 between the I-664/I-264 Bowers Hill interchange and the I-464 interchange.

In the video, you can see the driver put the vehicle in reverse, then turn around and start driving into oncoming traffic.

There were no reports of a crash in this area during the time frame of the incident.

As we were live on air, the VDOT camera operator attempted to follow the vehicle, but it quickly went out of view.

The new lanes will eventually operate as high-occupancy tolled Express Lanes, but for now drivers are invited to test out the new Chesapeake lanes toll-free. That period is expected to last for several weeks, with the tolling estimated to begin no earlier than March 17. You can count on WAVY to let you know when the tolling begins.
