VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (WAVY) — Virginia Beach Police are investigating a deadly shooting that happened overnight.

The shooting happened on Chartwell Drive, near Providence Road and South Military Highway.

Police were called to Chartwell Apartments for a gunshot wound and found a man dead. The man was later identified as 27-year-old Damen Ellington Graham, of Virginia Beach.

Officers went in and out of two separate apartments on Tuesday.  Neighbors living in the Chartwell Apartments described a busy crime scene outside of their homes.

“Right over there, just where that other police truck is, there was those cars over there, they were all walking around, people that were out, there was tape put up there is still that tape back there when I walk my dog earlier,” said neighbor Alana Aldridge.

10 On Your Side was out here earlier in the morning as police were investigating inside of a top floor apartment.

Then later on in the afternoon, investigators and a forensics unit were back out at the complex, looking in another apartment.

“It is kind of strange that they would be going to this one apartment while also being in that apartment,” Aldridge said.

Aldridge says she lives near the crime scene, but didn’t wake up to the sound of gunshots.

“I didn’t hear anything, my dog was perfectly fine and that’s what made me the most shocked cause I figured he would have started barking, stirring or any sort if something like this happened. I don’t know  I was kind of really shocked,” said Aldridge.

She says she doesn’t feel unsafe in the neighborhood but it does make her think twice about being aware of her surroundings.

“It does make me want to stay on guard a little more especially with a child,” she said.
