VB officer-involved shooting, robbery suspect appears in court

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (WAVY) — One of the suspects in a Thursday morning 7-Eleven armed robbery and subsequent officer-involved shooting appeared in a Virginia Beach court on Monday. Jasper Wynn had a video arraignment.

Police say Wynn and Jahkil McPhail, both 20, robbed a 7-Eleven on South Independence Boulevard on Oct. 12

Amazingly, police had the store under surveillance trying to solve a string of armed robberies.

Shots were fired as the two suspects ran from the store.

10 On Your Side’s cameras were not allowed to record the hearing. The charges against Wynn include two counts of attempted capital murder of police officers. The other charges are three counts of robbery, abduction by force, and five counts use of a firearm

Wynn’s arm was in a sling, but police are not saying which man, Wynn or his alleged accomplice Jahkil McPhail, is the one who fired at police as the two men ran out of the 7-Eleven wearing masks and dark clothing. McPhail has not yet been arraigned.

10 On Your Side has seen the surveillance video and it shows two suspects leaving the 7-Eleven. Off camera you hear the police yell “stop, police” and the suspects take off running. They then disappear around the corner, and then you hear several gunshots.

Leo Evans says he heard shots directly outside his town home, “I heard them … we needed more cover inside, no telling if bullets would ricochet or anything like that, so I took them to the children to the center of my house away from the windows.”

The one who shot at police with a handgun shot one round through the pants leg of an officer, but did not injure him, according to police. The suspect was then tracked by K9, caught, and transported to the hospital with non life-threatening injuries.

The second suspect got away and was tracked to a backyard shed by another K9. A neighbor who doesn’t want to be identified told 10 On Your Side, “Then my mom got up to use the bathroom, saw the flashing lights and we came out to like six cop cars all blockading the court. Then she saw police pulling him out from the neighbor’s back yard and bringing him out.”

Police are still investigating whether these two are responsible for other 7-Eleven armed robberies.

Wynn is hoping to get bond, but that could prove difficult. His next court date is December 20.
