NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (WAVY) – A homicide investigation is underway after police say a teenager was shot and killed Friday night in Newport News.
Police said officers were dispatched to Chestnut Avenue at 10:10 p.m. for a possible burglary in progress.
When police arrived, they found the teen with a gunshot wound.
Medics pronounced him dead at the scene. He has been identified as 18-year-old James Claggion IV.
Claggion’s family said he was visiting from Atlanta and was at his grandmother’s home by himself, getting ready to meet friends.
Relatives said his aunt stopped by and found furniture overturned, the TV volume turned up, and saw Claggion’s body on the floor, sticking out of a room.
His grandmother, Joyce Brown, said her daughter left the home because she did not know if anyone else was still in the home and called 911.
Brown said she and Claggion’s mother, Tamara Brown, were in D.C. for a conference on Friday and returned immediately when they got the phone call.
“It hurts so bad because it didn’t have to happen. It didn’t have to happen,” said Tamara Brown.
Brown said her son was caring, determined, smart, and loving and does not know anyone who would want to hurt her son.
“He’s one that everybody loved, except someone didn’t love him. Someone didn’t care about him to do what they did to him,” she said.
Their family said Claggion was living in Atlanta and was working to permanently move there to pursue a career in music.
They’re grateful they still have his music to listen to.
“We have something that some people don’t have.That’s his voice, with his music, and for that, I’m blessed and thankful,” Brown said.
His family believes it’s someone Claggion knew, because he would not have opened the door for a stranger.
“He let them in, he turned around, and they shot him in his back. You can’t be more cowardly than that. That was very, very cowardly,” Brown said.
Brown, who said she’s worked in the Newport News School District and provided counseling to many kids, is now asking for the community’s help to find out who pulled the trigger.
“I’ve been there for everybody. I need someone to be there for me. I miss my son,” she said.
Brown said she’s not asking for much, just information that could solve the crime.
“Call me. Talk to me. I’ve always listened to all their problems. I’m not going to stop now. They need to talk to me. They’ve done enough damage. It’s time to fix it,” she said
There is no suspect information at this time and police continue to investigate.
The fatal shooting came the same evening a 29-year-old man was shot on Middlesex Road in Newport News. He was expected to recover.
