NORFOLK, Va. (WAVY) — A teenager who pleaded guilty to charges in the shooting death of a high school senior in 2017 is now facing five years in prison.

Officials with the Norfolk Commonwealth’s Attorney’s Office said Lamontraye McAdams was sentenced May 4 to eight years for involuntary manslaughter, but had five years suspended on a condition of 10 years good behavior.

McAdams’ sentencing comes nearly one year after police responded to Lead Street, where Nateria S. Powell suffering from a gunshot wound. She later died at Sentara Norfolk General Hospital.

Powell was set to graduate from Maury High School at the time.

McAdams was initially charged with second-degree murder, but that was later amended to involuntary manslaughter. He pleaded guilty to that charge — as well as obstruction of justice and reckless handling of a firearm — during a hearing in February.

McAdams was sentenced to and year and six months for the firearm charge and six months for obstruction. He also faces three years of supervised probation after his time served.
