PORTSMOUTH, Va. (WAVY) — On the topic of social media, Virginia parents tend to agree that age 14 should be the age limit, a study by Test Prep Insight shows.
More and more research has come out on the negative effects of social media usage in children.
In Virginia, cyberbullying emerged as the top worry for parents in regard to social media, and 83% think there should be harsher penalties on social media companies not enforcing age restrictions.
Cell phone usage in children have also come under fire. Gov. Glenn Youngkin issued an executive order banning the use of cell phones in classrooms as part of a mental health and safety initiative.
Parents said their primary concerns pointed to several key issues. Cyberbullying emerged as the top worry, cited by 42% of respondents, followed by exposure to inappropriate content, which concerned 32% of parents.
Privacy and data security, negative impacts on mental health and screen addiction were also concerns albeit by a smaller percentage of respondents.
