State police: Man killed in head-on crash on I-664

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (WAVY) — State police are investigating an early morning crash on Interstate 664 near the Monitor Merrimac Memorial Bridge-Tunnel that left one person dead.

Virginia State police spokesperson Sgt. Michelle Anaya says two cars were involved in a crash that happened around 1:30 a.m. Friday.

State police said a 2013 Chrysler 200 going northbound on the southbound lanes hit a 2008 Honda Accord head-on. The driver of the Honda, 59-year-old Leonardo Maldonado, died as a result of the crash.

The driver of the Chrysler fled the scene and was later found at Sentara Hampton Careplex. State police say charges against the driver are pending.

For about five hours, all the southbound lanes were blocked between the 35th Street and 26th Street exits. The lanes are now clear.
