SOUTHAMPTON COUNTY, Va. (WAVY) — Sheriff’s office officials say evidence is suggesting that a missing 34-year-old woman from Southampton County did not leave of her own free will.
Virginia State Police issued a Critically Missing Adult Alert for Cynthia Carver on Saturday, Feb. 23. That alert has since expired, but Southampton County Sheriff’s Office deputies are working with surrounding law enforcement agencies to investigate Carver’s disappearance.
The sheriff’s office said the last time friends or family saw Carver was on Thursday, Feb. 21, around 9 p.m. in the town of Newsoms.
In a update on Monday, the sheriff’s office said a knife was found on the floor of Carver’s home on Everett Street, along with several blood stains on the carpet and kitchen floor.
Carver lives at the home along with her two children. The sheriff’s office said Carver’s children are safe and with family members.
The sheriff’s office said based on interviews with family and friends, Carver was possibly meeting with someone — an unknown male — at her home the night she disappeared.
Carver’s cellphone, purse and wallet are all missing — but her car is not.
According to the sheriff’s office, Carver’s mother contacted authorities on Friday after she was unable to get in touch with her daugter by phone and noticed that her car had not been moved all day.
Deputies have interviewed multiple subjects and have not ruled anyone out at this time. The sheriff’s office said it has been in contact with the FBI to share information and resources.
“It’s been hard, we just want to know where she’s at,” said Ann Carver.
It’s been a rollercoaster of emotions for Cynthia Carver’s family.
“It’s been bad. I can’t eat. I haven’t been eating or resting as much,” Ann said.
Cynthia’s mother, Ann, reported her daughter missing on Friday.
On Monday investigators told 10 On Your Side they found a knife and several blood stains inside the home and in a utility room.
“Without going into detail, I can say that these were not just a few drops of blood. These were larger stains in multiple areas,” said Detective Lt. Camden Cobb.
Investigators said, based on information from family, Cynthia was supposed to meet someone new the night she was last seen. It’s not known who that person is but we’re told detectives have requested search warrants for Cynthia’s social media accounts and cell phone records.
“That is one of the items that we’re working to confirm who that individual might be who she was supposed to be meeting that night and if that meeting in fact took place,” Cobb said.
Investigators said there was no sign of forced entry but evidence suggests there may have been a struggle.
“The home itself was kept very neat from all appearances. There was one area that appeared to have been disturbed,” Cobb said.
Cynthia’s mother said she doesn’t know why someone would want to hurt her daughter.
Detectives and family are asking anyone with information to let them know
“Anybody who know anything, please step up. We are suffering here,” Ann said.
The sheriff’s office has interviewed multiple people. We’re told there are no persons of interest but no one has been ruled out either.
