SOUTHAMPTON COUNTY, Va. (WAVY) — The man charged with murder in the death of his stepdaughter had narcotics inside his jail, and was possibly distributing the drugs to other inmates, according to the Southampton County Sheriff’s Office.

Deputies say they received a tip last Tuesday that Wesley Hadsell had narcotics inside the Southampton County Jail. He was searched, and deputies say they found a small amount of prescribed medication.

He may have also given some of the medication to fellow inmates, according to the sheriff’s office. He was arraigned on charges of manfacture, sell or possession of controlled substance and possession of a controlled substance by an inmate.

Hadsell, who’s currently serving a 10-year sentence for a possession of ammunition charge, pleaded not guilty last week in the 2015 death of his stepdaughter, A.J. Hadsell.

The 18-year-old Longwood University student was found behind an abdandoned home in Southampton County a month after she dissapeared from Norfolk. Investigators used the GPS from Hadsell’s work van to find her body, according to court documents. They also found a roll of duct tape, a shovel and work gloves with dirt residue during their investigation.

The medical examiner determined she died from homicidal violence and acute heroin poisoning.

Police long considered Hadsell a suspect, and in November of 2018, he was indicted on murder charges by a grand jury. Hadsell continues to claim his innocence.
