PORTSMOUTH, Va. (WAVY) – Virginia’s primary election is June 18, 2024.

Early in-person voting began on May 3. The last day to vote early in-person at your local voter registration office was on Saturday, June 15.

On the ballot are Democratic and Republican candidates for the U.S. Senate and House of Representatives.

Polls will be open on Election Day in Virginia from 6 a.m. until 7 p.m. You will need to bring an accepted form of identification with you.

May 28 was the deadline to register to vote in the June 18 elections or update an existing registration. Find out more about same-day registration on the Virginia Department of Elections website.

Who is on the ballot?

The outcomes of the June 18 Virginia Democratic and Republican primaries will determine who the winners will run against in the November election.

Not every race on the ballot in November will have a primary election in June. The Hampton Roads region includes the following primary races (only contested races with localities in Hampton Roads represented are listed below):

Republican Primary

There are five candidates running in the 2024 Virginia Republican Primary for U.S. Senate. They include, Hung Cao, Edward C. “Eddie” Garcia Jr., Jonathan W. Emord, C.L. “Chuck” Smith Jr. and Scott Thomas Parkinson. The winner will challenge Democratic incumbent Sen. Tim Kaine in November. No one is challenging Sen. Kaine for the Democratic nomination, so there is no Democratic primary in June.

Democratic Primary

Two candidates are running in the Democratic Primary for Virginia’s 1st Congressional District: Herbert C. Jones Jr. and Leslie C. Mehta. Localities with precincts in the 1st District include York County, Richmond, Lancaster County, Essex County, Westmoreland County, Henrico County, Gloucester County, Mathews County, Middlesex County, Northumberland County, King and Queen County, Hanover County, Poquoson, James City County, King William County, Chesterfield County, New Kent County and Williamsburg.

Two candidates are also running in the Democratic Primary for Virginia’s 2nd Congressional District: Missy Cotter Smasal and Jeremiah “Jake” Denton IV. Localities with precincts in the 2nd District include Accomack County, Suffolk, Isle of Wight County, Chesapeake, Southampton County, Virginia Beach and Franklin.

There are no local races impacting Hampton Roads voters, on the June primary ballots.
