HAMPTON ROADS, Va. (WAVY) — Sen. Tim Kaine and Republican challenger Hung Cao had vastly different views on Tuesday’s presidential debate between former President Donald Trump and Vice President Kamala Harris, with Kaine saying it went well for Harris, and Cao arguing that Virginians “saw firsthand” why they need to elect former President Donald Trump and himself.
Kaine believes the debate will surely help voters make some tough decisions ahead of the November election. He also noted the importance of voters doing their research, not just the presidential election, but in every election.
“Everybody in this election cycle, you should really make sure that any information you’re getting has a good solid verifiable source to it, and you can usually pretty quickly on the internet,” Kaine said. “If you’re wondering if something is accurate or not, you can find it pretty fast.”
In a statement, Cao said that the debate provided a reminder to Virginians that the U.S. can’t withstand four more years of what he said were extreme, radical policies that have made life harder for people across Virginia and the U.S.
“… Virginians saw firsthand how important it is to elect President Trump and Senator [J.D.] Vance in November,” Cao’s statement reads. “Every problem our country has faced over the last four years, Kamala Harris was right there either creating it or making it worse with her partner Joe Biden. She, and her allies in Congress like Tim Kaine, will never bring the change our country so desperately needs, and everybody knows it. President Trump and I will bring that change: securing our border, restoring American jobs and bringing peace through strength.”
Kaine and Cao are scheduled to debate Wednesday, Oct. 2. The debate will be held at Norfolk State University and televised statewide. WAVY TV 10 is among the Virginia stations airing the debate. It will also stream live on WAVY.com.
