PORTSMOUTH, Va. (WAVY) — The Democratic Party of Virginia is now asking election officials to remove an independent candidate from the November ballot.
The Democratic Party sent letters to the state election board and Virginia Attorney General Mark Herring on Wednesday about the race for Virginia’s 2nd Congressional District.
This all started with accusations of forgery on petitions that staffers of Congressman Scott Taylor circulated.
10 On Your Side told you earlier this week a judge ordered a special prosecutor to investigate.
The petition was to have independent candidate, Shaun Brown, added to the ballot. The move has been seen as an effort by Republicans to split the Democratic vote in a tight race.

The Democratic Party of Virginia sent a letter to the state board of elections which says in part: “I write to request that you take immediate action reversing the decision to certify Ms. Brown’s candidacy … If you do not take action by noon this Friday, August 10 we intend to seek judicial intervention.”
The department of elections told 10 On Your Side they have no comment at this time due to an ongoing investigation.
The Attorney General’s office said, “These are very serious allegations … We have been in touch with both the special prosecutor and the Department of Elections and will continue to work with them as appropriate while the investigation and information gathering process continues.
