NORFOLK, Va. (WAVY) – After four days in Chicago, the Democratic National Convention wrapped up Thursday evening with Vice President Kamala Harris accepting the Democratic nomination.

Now almost two months from the general election, ODU political scientist Ben Melusky, Ph.D. spoke to WAVY about his takeaways from the DNC.

Melusky joined the Digital Desk to discuss the week in Chicago and what’s next. Watch the segment in the video player on this page.

Prior to the week, Melusky said there was concern the Democratic party would be split. It’s only been a month since President Joe Biden stepped down from the race.

This week, Melusky said the Democratic party came together around Harris. It began with Biden passing the baton on Monday night and continued throughout the week with celebrities, party insiders and rising stars building her up.

“It really shows you that the discord or concern about the democratic party being fractured isn’t there right now, they’re enthused,” said Melusky.

Melusky said from an analyst perspective, the democratic party showed at the convention, they have a strong platform.

“They’ve hit on the main issues we’ll hear about for the next 74 days in every television ad, radio, you name it, it’s going to be there,” said Melusky.

He also said there was also some discord in the party.

“I’d say the only discord that might still be there has to deal with Palestine and Israel,” said Melusky.

According to Melusky, both conventions left parties unified behind their candidates and enthusiastic for the general election.
