Biography: I retired from Virginia Beach City Public Schools after 39 years in public education as the Executive Director of Student Support Services. Prior to coming to Virginia Beach City Public Schools where I spent 17 years, I was a teacher, school counselor, administrator, and specialist for the Virginia Department of Education. I received my Bachelor of Arts in English and Master of Education in Guidance and Counseling from Virginia State University, in Ettrick, Virginia. I earned a Doctorate in Education Administration and Policy Studies from The George Washington University in Washington D.C.

Why are you running for this office?

I want to represent Virginia Beach School Board District 4 to ensure our students’ academic, social-emotional, and career development through an inclusive school environment that meets the needs of all students.

What is the top challenge facing Virginia Beach City Public Schools, and how would you address it?

Teacher compensation is a priority because without competitive pay there will not be a highly qualified workforce to instruct students and opportunities for the school division to enhance student learning. I will advocate for a competitive pay scale and benefits for teachers and staff.

How do you feel about the politicization of public education?

The politicization of public education is polarizing and negatively impacts students having a balanced curriculum, specifically around the historical experiences of marginalized groups and denies students’ access to information that is accurate.

What is your view on banning certain books from school libraries?

Virginia Beach City Public Schools currently has a book ban in place which restricts the intellectual freedom of all students. All parents should have input for his/her student’s intellectual freedoms. Book bans block diverse learning opportunities and denies the intellectual rights of all students.

Within the last year, the Kempsville High School baseball team was forced to forfeit the season due to racism allegations. How would you ensure there is not a racist culture within schools?

I will advocate for policies that ensure a safe and supportive school environment that is free from discrimination. Additionally, policies should address promoting a positive school climate. Every student has protective rights to learn in a safe and supportive setting, free from discrimination. All students should feel they are welcome and realize their potential free of threat, intimidation, and discrimination.

How will you still value constituents with whom you disagree with?

We all share the same goal of a good education for our students, but may disagree about the approach. I am an effective communicator and collaborator who is an excellent problem solver when working with multiple stakeholders with different viewpoints to resolve issues. I respect all points of view.
