Police believe man purposely crashed into SUV on First Colonial in suicide attempt

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (WAVY) — Court documents say a three-vehicle crash Friday night on First Colonial Road may have been on purpose.

Virginia Beach Police charged 20-year-old Matthew Rushin with attempted murder, saying he caused the crash

10 On Your Side obtained court documents that say witnesses told a detective after the crash that Rushin said he was trying to commit suicide.

Paperwork says the amount of evidence against Rushin is strong, showing the detective reviewed surveillance footage of a nearby business.

The detective explains that, in the video, Rushin cuts across the median and drives into oncoming traffic.

Then they say he hit a Ford Expedition driven by 77-year-old George Cusick.

Cusick was one of four people who went to the hospital after the accident.

Documents say he is in critical condition with two collapsed lungs, a broken leg and a brain bleed, among several other injuries.

Officials say Rushin has no prior criminal record.

He is expected back in court Thursday morning for his bond hearing, and right now he’s behind bars without bail.
