NORFOLK, Va. (WAVY) — A person was found dead after a house fire broke out Thursday morning in Norfolk.
Fire officials said they were notified around 12:50 a.m. for a fire in the 3500 block of Somme Avenue.
Officials confirmed one fatality, but haven’t released the person’s identity. A neighbor said a couple lived in the home, and the victim was an elderly woman.
“The couple is so sweet. This is so sad,” the neighbor said.
A firefighter was also transported for possible heat exhaustion. They were eventually released. No other injuries were reported.
Firefighters found high heat and heavy smoke focused around the garage when they arrived and found the victim on a secondary search. It took crews about an hour and a half to get the fire under control.
There are no other details at this time, but crime scene tape went up at the scene around 7 a.m. Norfolk police and fire marshals are investigating and said one person has been displaced.
