VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (WAVY) — Authorities say a shooter is dead after a female sailor was injured in a shooting Friday morning at Naval Air Station Oceana.
Capt. Chad Vincelette, the base’s commanding officer, said in a news conference a male sailor shot a female sailor several times in the parking lot of Strike Fighter Squadron 37 (VFA-37), outside Hanger 145, around 6:45 a.m. Both sailors are assigned to the squadron.

The shooter, who was armed with a single handgun, was quickly identified and was shot and killed by base security, Vincelette said. The incident was over in around five minutes.
The female sailor was taken to Sentara Virginia Beach General Hospital. Her injuries are not considered life-threatening.
Vincelette said the base has a no weapons policy, and does “random and periodic inspections for prohibited items.” An investigation is underway into how he got the gun onto the base.

The base was placed on lockdown following the incident, but that was lifted at 7:40 a.m.
Vincelette said Naval Criminal Investigative Service (NCIS) is investigating the shooting.
Virginia’s Senators both released statements on the shooting Friday.
Sen. Tim Kaine said in a statement, “My office is closely monitoring the situation at Naval Air Station Oceana. My heart is with those who have been impacted and I’m grateful for the first responders on the scene.”
Sen. Mark Warner said in a tweet his office has been in contact with U.S. Navy officials. “At this time, I want to thank the brave individuals who quickly secured the base. I’ll continue monitoring this situation as officials gather more information,” the tweet said.
