JAMES CITY COUNTY, Va. (WAVY) — A tornado touched down in James City County Thursday night during Tropical Storm Michael, the National Weather Service confirms.
The weather says said that the tornado was between an EF-0 and an EF-1 and hit on Thursday afternoon.
This follows reports of two confirmed tornadoes in Gloucester County.
“When you hear about tornadoes down in our area you never think it will actually go over your house,” said James City County resident and storm victim Kayla Hall. “All the sudden I hear the train noise.”
It was at that point that the storm hit Nina Road.
Neighbor Bryan Goodwin also heard the storm before anything else, “we heard that and we just hightailed it to the bathroom.”
Goodwin also shared that the storm was over quickly, “It wasn’t very long before it was done, but the house shook. You could hear stuff hitting the side of the house.”
Even though the storm was over quickly, its damage affected Hall personally — a tree branch landed on her car while her husband Alex Hall was about to run errands.
“We’re lucky that he was actually in the car if you think about it,” Kayla said. “If the timing would have been a minute earlier and he was walking out to the car it could have been devastating for us.”

The storm affected three neighborhoods in the Norge area of the county — Colonial Heritage, Village at Candle Station and Kristiansand. 14 homes were damaged, but no one was injured.

James City County officials 17,000 residents remained without power Friday morning.
