NORFOLK, Va. (WAVY) — Norview High School’s NJROTC program is number 1, as they were recently named “Most Outstanding Unit” by the U.S. Navy.

On Wednesday night, more than a dozen members of Norview High’s Naval Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps (NJROTC) program stood in front of the Norfolk School Board to be honored for the recognition they received back in August.

The Commander of Naval Service Training Command, Rear Admiral Michael Bernacchi, came to Norfolk to say that out of 538 programs across the U.S., Europe, and Asia, Norview’s was top for the 2017-2018 school year. Norview’s program also happens to be the largest on the East Coast with over 400 active cadets, according to a release sent out by the school system.

The program is designed to use classroom instruction and extra-curricular activities to instill students with a sense of national pride, enhance their leadership skills, and help develop participants into knowledgeable and productive citizens, the release stated.

The award was given because of superior performance across “a myriad of activities and objectives outlined for program participants.”
