AHOSKIE, N.C. (WAVY) — Authorities in Ahoskie, North Carolina, are investigating after a woman was shot and killed while sitting in a car at a gas station Friday.
On Wednesday, the shiny, festive balloons bobbing in the wind at the abandoned Sunoco station on South Academy Street belied the dark reality of Friday night.
It’s where 37-year-old Patrice Matthews-Faison, a resident of Hall Siding Road, was shot dead three days before her birthday.
Ahoskie Police Department Maj. Jimmy Asbell said the homicide happened around 8 p.m. Friday at the Sunoco gas station on NC Highway 42 west, past the Ahoskie Creek Bridge.
Faison’s sister knows the reason she was there.
“Picking up her son,” said Kristal Brooks. But she says this location wasn’t a common handoff point for her sister and the father of her youngest son.
Ahoskie police say they have a person or persons of interest, and are developing suspect information, but are not releasing any further information.
One of Faison’s other children, 13-year-old Tre’, was just treated at Children’s Hospital of The King’s Daughters for an inflammation syndrome related to COVID-19. She organized a parade for him in town earlier this month, and Brooks says that was typical of her sister’s take-charge spirit.
“Doing the whole parade, it was for Tre’ but it was really to help all the other children and parents,” by bringing attention to Multisystem Inflammatory Syndrome in Children, Brooks said.
Brooks wants to raise her sister’s three kids, but right now she’s in emotional limbo.
“I can’t mourn yet until people help us figure out what exactly happened. The killer’s out there,” she said.
