LEE COUNTY, N.C. (WNCN) — Deputies with the Lee County Sheriff’s Office said that a man and woman were arrested after a traffic stop led to the seizure of cocaine over the weekend.
On Sunday, narcotics agents with the sheriff’s office conducted a traffic stop on a vehicle on Bailey Thomas Road. During the stop, agents found about 22 pounds (10 kilos) of cocaine hidden in a compartment in the vehicle.
Investigators also seized about $40,000 in U.S. currency.
The driver, 28-year-old Yuricela Hernadez and the passenger, 39-year-old Jose Sanchez Cruz were arrested and placed into custody.
They were both charged with:
- Trafficking cocaine by transport
- trafficking cocaine by possession
- maintaining a vehicle for sale of controlled substance
- possession of drug paraphernalia
- misdemeanor child abuse as the result of an 11-year-old child in the vehicle.
Hernandez and Cruz were originally given a bond of $500,000 and both bonds were later raised to $1 million secured.
