PASQUOTANK COUNTY, Va. (WAVY) — A Pasquotank woman allegedly burned her estranged husband’s clothes before setting fire to their home last week, the Pasquotank County Sheriff’s Office says.

And after her arrest, the sheriff’s office says she slipped out of handcuffs to smoke a cigarette in a patrol car before kicking a deputy.

It all happened last Tuesday, Jan. 30. Deputies responded to the fire at the couple’s home just before 6 p.m. in the 100 block of Trinity Trail in Elizabeth City and found heavy smoke.

Suspect Cassandra Spain and her husband Michael were standing at the end of the driveway when police arrived. Investigators were able to determine that Spain allegedly set fire in the master bedroom. She was placed under arrest and charged with first-degree arson, and the Pasquotank-Providence Volunteer Fire Department and Newland Volunteer Fire Department were able to extinguish the fire.

The sheriff’s office says that after Spain’s arrest she was able to get out of her handcuffs and smoke a cigarette in the patrol car. When the deputy stopped to adjust her cuffs, the sheriff’s office says she kicked the deputy.

She was also charged with assault on a government official and possession of a marijuana. She’s being held at the Albemarle District Jail under a $250,000.00 secured bond while the incident remains under investigation.
