UPDATES FOR WEDNESDAY, JANUARY 10:

  • Virginia Beach City Public Schools will be on a two-hour delay on Wednesday, January 10.
  • Currituck County Schools will operate on a two-hour delay for Wednesday, Jan. 10.
  • Dare County Schools will be closed Wednesday, with an optional teach workday.
  • Gates County Schools and New Beginnings Daycare will be closed Wednesday due to power outages in some parts of the county.
  • Sentara College of Health Sciences Chesapeake campus is on a two-hour delay Wednesday due to a power outage.
  • Perquimans County Schools will be closed for students Wednesday, with a two-hour delay optional workday for staff.
  • New Kent County Public Schools will operate on a two-hour delay Wednesday.
  • Carrsville Elementary School in Isle of Wight County is without power and will be closed  on Wednesday, January 10.  
  • Edenton-Chowan Schools are operating on a two-hour delay Wednesday due to power outages and minor flooding.
  • ECPPS is closed for students Wednesday.
  • Suffolk Public Schools operated on a two-hour delay Wednesday.
  • Accomack County Public Schools announced Wednesday would be a virtual learning day for students.

PORTSMOUTH, Va. (WAVY) — Tuesday’s threat of inclement weather prompted several local school districts to adjust their schedules, and the National Parks Service to announce park closures in the Outer Banks.

Hampton Roads Transit also announced impacts to its services.

Tuesday will bring rain and storms to the area along with heavy wind gusts. Wind gusts will be 25-30 mph in the morning, and will reach 45-55 mph in the afternoon.

Several local school divisions have made adjustments to their Tuesday schedules. They are divided below by affected North Carolina and Virginia school districts in the WAVY viewing area.

Virginia

Accomack County Schools

Accomack County Public School students will have a virtual learning day for Wednesday, Jan. 10.

Accomack County Public Schools dismissed two hours early on Tuesday, Jan. 9. All after school programs were also canceled.

Chesapeake

Chesapeake Public Schools cancelled all after-school activities for Jan. 9 due to inclement weather. This includes the YMCA child care and Boys and Girls Club.

Gloucester

All Gloucester Public Schools after-school student activities are canceled for Tuesday, Jan. 9.

Some afternoon bus stops could be affected by tides.

Hampton

Hampton City Schools will operate on a two-hour early dismissal for Jan. 9. All after-school programs and events have been cancelled.

The dismissal times are as follows:

  • All early elementary schools will dismiss at 12:05 p.m.
  • Armstrong, Barron, Cooper and Mary Jackson elementary schools will dismiss at 1:35 p.m.
  • Phenix PreK-8 School will dismiss at 12:19 p.m.
  • Moton will dismiss at 12:55 p.m.
  • Mallory and Rivermont will dismiss at 1 p.m.
  • All high schools and Bridgeport will dismiss at 1:09 p.m.
  • All middle schools, Andrews PK-8 School and Kilgore Gifted Center will dismiss at 1:49 p.m.
  • All CFA locations, including Klin Creek, YMS and all students at the Woodside Lane programs will dismiss at 12 p.m.

Isle of Wight

With the potential for localized flooding and high winds Tuesday afternoon, IWCS has decided to cancel all after-school activities.  In addition, students attending the Governor’s School for the Arts or Governor’s School for Science & Technology will not be sent there Tuesday. Schools will notify parents regarding the rescheduling of any cancelled events.  

Isle of Wight County Schools and Offices will also be dismissing two hours early.

Carrsville Elementary School in Isle of Wight County will be closed for Wednesday, Jan. 10 due to a power outage.

New Kent

New Kent County Public Schools will operate on an early-release schedule on Tuesday, Jan. 9 in anticipation of inclement weather.

  • New Kent High School and New Kent Middle School will release at 12:30 p.m.
  • George W. Watkins Elementary School, New Kent Elementary School, and Quinton Elementary School will release at 1:30 p.m.
  • All after-school activities are canceled.

Newport News

Newport News Public Schools will close schools and offices one and a half hours early on Jan. 9. All after-school activities, events and athletics have also been cancelled. Schools will follow the published early dismissal schedule, which you can view at https://sbo.nn.k12.va.us/ophours.pdf.

Newport News Parks and Recreation Afterschool Programs will close at 5 p.m. Tuesday.

Norfolk

Norfolk Public Schools cancelled all after-school events and activities for Jan. 9

Portsmouth

Portsmouth Public Schools cancelled all after-school events and activities for Jan. 9.

Suffolk

Suffolk Public Schools will operate on a 2-hour delay for staff and students.

Due to the potential for flooding and high winds, Suffolk Public Schools will have a 2-hour early dismissal. All after-school activities for Tuesday, Jan. 9 have also been cancelled.

The dismissal times are as follows:

  • 12 p.m.: Middle Schools
  • 1 p.m.: High Schools
  • 1:50 p.m.: Elementary Schools

Virginia Beach

With heavy rain and winds in the forecast, VBCPS has canceled all after-school activities for Tuesday, Jan. 9. Elementary after-school programs run by Parks & Recreation are also canceled. And the Governor’s School has canceled classes.

The school system suggests families and staff monitor virginiabeach.gov for updates from the city of Virginia Beach and to sign up for VBAlert.

Williamsburg-James City County

Williamsburg-James City County Schools will release one hour early on Jan. 9 due to high winds and significant rain. All after-school activities have also been cancelled.

Early release times are as follows:

  • 1 p.m.: Jamestown, Lafayette and Warhill
  • 1:45 p.m.: Lois S. Hornsby, James Blair, Berkeley and Toano
  • 2:25 p.m.: James River and Stonehouse
  • 3:05 p.m.: Clara Byrd Baker, D.J. Montague, J. Blayton, Laurel Lane, Matoaka, Matthew Whaley and Norge

Bright Beginnings early release times:

  • 11:30 a.m. – J. Blaine Blayton, Laurel Lane
  • 12:45 p.m. – Clara Byrd Baker, D.J. Montague, Norge

New Horizons students in the PM session will remain at their home school and be dismissed at the time above.

All WJCC Schools facilities will close following completion of all dismissal routines. Staff will receive further direction about early release from their supervisor.

York County

YCSD will be implementing early dismissals for all schools on Tuesday, Jan. 9, due to potential hazardous weather conditions. Schools will dismiss as follows:

  • 1 p.m.: All high schools (except YRA)
  • 1:45 p.m.: All middle schools & YRA
  • 2:30 p.m.: All elementary schools

Due to the early dismissal, all after-school activities and events, including athletic practices are canceled. The Boys and Girls Club and Right at School will also be closed Tuesday afternoon.

North Carolina

Camden County Schools

Camden County Schools will release students at 12:30 p.m. Tuesday due to impending weather to allow for all of its buses to finish with their routes before the approaching heavy winds and rain.

All afterschool programs and school-sponsored activities are also canceled Tuesday.

Currituck County Schools

Currituck County Schools will operate on a District-Wide early release day for all students on Tuesday, Jan. 9. All afterschool activities for Tuesday will also be canceled.

Currituck County Schools will operate on a 2-hour delay for Wednesday, Jan. 10.

Dare County Schools

All Dare County Schools will be closed for students on Wednesday, Jan. 10. For more information, please visit Dare County Schools’ website

Dare County Schools has made Tuesday, Jan. 9 a remote learning day for all students and an early dismissal day for staff. If weather conditions persist into Wednesday, Dare County School officials say they will update the community on Wednesday’s hours by noon Tuesday.

Edenton-Chowan Schools

Edenton-Chowan Schools will dismiss at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 9.

The schools will operate on a 2-hour delay for Jan. 10.

Elizabeth City-Pasquotank Public Schools

Elizabeth City-Pasquotank Public Schools will operate on a three hour early release on Tuesday, Jan. 9. Additionally, all after school activities and the After School Enrichment Program has been cancelled for Tuesday.

Due to road conditions, ECPPS will be closed for students on Wednesday, Jan. 10.

Elizabeth City State University

All classes will transition to remote learning beginning at 3:30 p.m., on Tuesday, Jan. 9.

The basketball games against Shaw University will go on as scheduled at 5:30 p.m., and 7:30 p.m., but will be closed to the public.

Elizabeth City Offices

All city offices in Elizabeth City will close at 11:30 a.m. Tuesday because of the weather.

Hertford County Public Schools

Hertford County Public Schools will close at 11:30 a.m. Tuesday due to anticipated adverse weather conditions. All afterschool events scheduled for Tuesday, including extracurricular activities and clubs, have been canceled.

Basketball and wrestling events initially planned for Tuesday have been rescheduled for Wednesday.

Hyde County Schools

Hyde County Schools will have an early release day Tuesday to allow students and staff to get home ahead of expected severe weather. Ocracoke School will dismiss at noon and Mattamuskeet School will do so at 12:30 p.m.

Afterschool and sports activities are canceled, also, along with the PTO meeting at Mattamuskeet. Students taking community college classes need to contact their professors to make them aware of the early release.

Perquimans County Schools

Perquimans County Schools will dismiss students at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday due to the forecast of high sustained winds and wind gusts. All afterschool activities will also be canceled Tuesday.

The school division will be closed for students on Wednesday due to the high potential of flooding in low-lying areas.

Other Services/Sites Impacted

National Park Service Sites

The National Park Service announced facilities at Cape Hatteras National Seashore, Fort Raleigh National Historic Site and Wright Brothers National Memorial, will be closed Tuesday and Wednesday due to the anticipated weather impacts.

Cape Hatteras National Seashore

  • The Oregon Inlet Campground and all other visitor facilities will close at noon Tuesday.
  • Visitor facilities and the campgrounds will open at 10 a.m. Wednesday depending on storm impacts. Click here for operational updates.

  • Visitor facilities at Fort Raleigh National Historic Site will close at 12 p.m. Tuesday.
