Cape Hatteras National Seashore confirms second house collapses in Rodanthe

MANTEO, N.C. (WAVY) — Yet another house has collapsed in Rodanthe, according to Cape Hatteras National Seashore.

This is the second house in as many days to collapse and apparently wash away to sea on the 23000 block of GA Kohler Court.


Around 9:18 p.m., Dare County dispatch notified Seashore about the house collapse. Once at the scene, Seashore law enforcement rangers confirmed that the unoccupied, one-story house was damaged has a result of the first house collapse.

Visitors are urged to stay out of the water avoid injuries from hazardous floating debris and to wear hard-soled shoes when walking on the beach to avoid nail-ridden wooden debris. 

Since Friday afternoon, varying levels of debris associated with the collapse of 23001 G A Kohler Court were seen about nine miles to the south of the collapse site, according to Seashore.

Seashore officials have been in contact with the property owner of 23009 G A Kohler Court and anticipate that a contractor to be secured for debris cleanup. 

This is the ninth house collapse on Seashore beaches over the past four years.
